Physiotherapy Consultation

Rehab Plus offers Physiotherapy Consultation services to our clients. The Physiotherapy Consultation is an in-depth spinal and peripheral assessment performed by one of our physiotherapists. We will assess the client and provide the referral source with a report which consists of:

Mechanism of injury
Present complaints of pain or dysfunction
Full neuro-musculoskeletal assessment
Clinical findings
Prognosis for recovery
Potential for rehabilitation
Return to work recommendations

Specific recommendations will be provided to assist in the future management of the client. If the referral source would like our facility to assist appropriate clients in their recovery, we will stipulate the type of program necessary, the length of treatment program, the cost and expected treatment outcome.

At Rehab Plus we offer a variety of approaches and programs to address each phase of recovery:

Active Treatment Approach

Our active treatment approach is time limited and goal directed. We approach the pain control phase of treatment with manual therapy techniques as well as individual or group stretching and functional movement sessions. Anti-inflammatory and pain relieving modalities such as ultrasound, cryotherapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), electrical muscle stimulation and acupuncture are also used to decrease pain and discomfort while regaining mobility. A large emphasis is placed on patient education at an early stage to promote patient independence and compliance while decreasing the risk of recurrence through the development of safe movement patterns and positioning

Physiotherapy Treatment Approach

Our treatment approach consists of safe, progressive physical rehabilitation programs designed for clients who have suffered soft tissue or orthopedic injury to the spine or extremities. Following the completion of a thorough musculoskeletal assessment, the client participates in a treatment program which is subdivided into two phases:

Pain Control Phase

This phase emphasizes the abolishment of pain and inflammation while promoting the recovery of range of motion. It corresponds primarily to the inflammatory stage of healing or the acute phase of an injury. Pain control treatment modalities may, however, also be used during the sub-acute or chronic stages of an injury as necessary. The extent of passive intervention needed will depend on the previous treatment received as well as the nature and severity of the injuries sustained.

Injury Specific Exercises and Education Phase

This phase of treatment emphasizes pain management, injury education and recovery of function. Treatment includes specific flexibility, strengthening and conditioning exercises to help regain full mobility, strength and endurance. The ultimate goal is to safely maximize a client's functional level with regards to work, homemaking and caregiving as well as activities of daily living. The treatment team consists of a physiotherapist and a kinesiologist.

Note: The Pain Control Phase and the Injury Specific Exercises and Education may be performed concurrently.
